Graduate School for Cellular and Biomedical Sciences
At the latest at the end of the second year, an external co-referee has to be selected and approved by the members of the thesis committee, and must be proposed to the GCB. The selection is subject to approval by the Expert Committee. External co-referees are internationally recognized researchers in the research area of the candidate's thesis project; they must not be affiliated with the University of Bern, must not be involved in active collaboration with the candidate's research group and not have had any co-authorship with the supervisor or the candidate during the last three years.
The external co-referee's task will be to provide an independent, written assessment of the candidate's PhD thesis and to award a mark. This assessment is written on the official GCB form Thesis Assessment External Co-referee (vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document, 121KB) and is submitted to the GCB four weeks before the date of the thesis defence at the latest.
Please note: External co-referees are only assigned to candidates performing their PhD according to the new GCB Regulations effective since July 2011.
